Please give information about your company

We want to take an updated look at hiring demand in oil & gas industry to see if it's been growing and which jobs are most commonly being recruited?

Oil and gas workers’ pay across the world has been outpacing broader wage inflation for several years. But in some markets like Brazil, the UK and Australia market is exceptionally tight due both to the recent growth in activity and the global competition for staff, particularly from emerging markets and the US shale gas industry.

Average wages in the UK’s oil and gas sector are set to rise by 15 per cent this year – breaking through the $100,000-a-year ceiling, according to the Financial Times.

The figures above show how competitive it has been to find skilled Oil & Gas workers. In many emerging markets, people have chosen to study other fields of education and the rise of investments in the Oil & Gas in these countries is pushing competition across the globe.

The problem is the dual impact of historic lack of training in many countries and pressure from well-paid jobs globally, with the record investment in Oil & Gas in places like the North Sea in the UK, the Pre-Salt in Brazil, the Shale Gas in the US .

This pressure on wages and skilled staff does not look likely to end any time soon and a survey done by a jobsite also found that 70% of oil and gas companies were worried that wages were rising too fast.
A report by forecaster IHS Global Insight forecast and only in the US, the Oil & Gas boom will create 3.5 Million Jobs by 2035.

In general, technical positions is where we see most of the shortage globally: fracking, stimulation drilling and reservoir Engineers, professionals specialized in deep waters production, MWD Field Engineers, geologists, welders, amongst several other highly technical positions

Please specify 5 vital skills and certifications that candidates are commonly required in oil & gas industry. Which certifications are most commonly listed in the job ads as job requirements?

I would say that the most important skill above specific technical knowledge is mobility. Companies are looking for professionals that they could use in projects across the globe, as many of these Oil & Gas producers have projects in every continent.

As known, increasing hiring demand is likely to make these some jobs moderately hard-to-fill. Please give / share some examples.

Exactly, in markets like Brazil and Australia governments have been investing millions in training in order to fill the gap, as in both countries Oil & Gas and Mining are requiring similar professional, making the problem even worst. Companies are being forced to recruit professionals on the other side of the globe in order to continue prospecting and exploration projects. One very difficult position across the globe is Geologists. As geologists work both in the Oil & Gas and Mining industries, there is a lot of competition for this sort of professional between the 2 industries.

Are they any newly emerging job profiles or names in this industry?

A study by London-based law firm Hogan Lovells in the energy industry suggested that managers ranked talent as their most important priority for achieving success, with 67% of global corporate managers placing it top of their list and some 45% of those surveyed believe innovation would be the greatest challenge to their industry in the next two years.

So what we see is that new jobs that would help companies to innovate, to create or produce on a cleverer way will drive the future. I also see that many new jobs related to new sources of renewable energy will be created, for instance:

-       Information-technology specialists for Oil & Gas, Wireline operators, who collect data and perform other tasks

-       Environmental professionals will be needed to fill positions as occupational health and safety technicians to ensure that energy producers comply with federal, state, and local regulations.

-       Engineers and architects to plan the next generation of wind turbines and wind farms.

-       Smart grids/utilities: Although increased automation of energy grids is expected to result in a net loss of positions over the next decade, new ones are still being created, particularly in the area of information technology

-       Simulation engineer: There's a simulator for nearly everything these days, from surgeries to flying to drinking and driving. As more simulation-based technologies follow suit, engineers will be required to help out.
